Notable Ocala and Marion County wind, tornado, and tropical events
Several high-end wind and tornado events in the NCEI record illustrate how quickly straight-line microbursts, squall-line tornadoes, and inland hurricanes bring down Marion County oaks and pines: on December 14, 2013, an 87-knot (100 mph) downburst struck Anthony north of Ocala, heavily damaging a wooden barn and snapping mature trees; on March 12, 2022, a pre-frontal squall line produced a 26.65-mile EF1 tornado tracking from Dunnellon across Marion County while Ocala mesonet station AV369 measured a 73 mph (63-knot) thunderstorm wind gust; on April 26, 2023, supercells dropped hail up to 3.00 inches in Anthony and 1.75-inch golf-ball hail at the Marion County Emergency Operations Center in West End; and on April 3, 2024, an estimated 65-knot (75 mph) downburst near Martin along NW 80th Ave and Highway 225A snapped water oaks and damaged outbuildings.
Inland tropical cyclones have repeatedly tested Ocala's canopy even though Marion County lies 35 miles inland from both the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean: NCEI logs tropical-storm impacts across Marion County during Tropical Storm Colin, Hurricane Hermine, and Hurricane Matthew in 2016, Hurricane Irma in September 2017, Tropical Storm Eta in November 2020, Hurricane Idalia in August 2023, and the back-to-back 2024 trio of Hurricane Debby (August 4–5, 2024, with 9.37 inches of rain and 41 mph gusts at Ocala International Airport KOCF), Hurricane Helene (September 26, 2024, when a tree fell onto an Ocala home causing roof damage and over 45,000 customers lost power), and Hurricane Milton (October 9, 2024, dropping 3 to 9 inches of rain and toppling trees and power lines countywide).
